Saturday Studio Shot

11/23/2013

My studio is a mess! again.
Sometimes I'm the person that goes a little crazy if all the tubes of paints are not lined up just right, towels folded and stacked, cups cleaned, all boards lined up in a row, paints alphabetized (ha), keyboard and mouse perfectly arranged...I like order. I daydream about order. I hear angels singing when I'm imersed in order. I cannot keep order, especially during this BUSY season in the art world. Ok fine, even when it's not that busy I seem to abuse my oder standards.

Picture
Picture
Some of those tubes of paint are lined up very nice. aaaaaaaah

Picture
My dad has a sign in his shop that reads, "Empty desk, empty mind. Cluttered desk, cluttered ?" Hmmmmmmmm
Picture
I'm not gonna clutter my mind with worry about this. It's all good :)

Darn distractions.

10/31/2013

Distractions
are an important tool while living a creative life!

When I walk through the garden
and see the plants that grew from the TEENY TINY seeds that we buried,
I'm always so surprised to see what happens.
It sounds corny...but to me it's a miracle.
Picture

Picture

Nature is the BEST distraction of all.
There is no place I would rather be than on the water.
(Not IN the water. ON the water. I don't like all the human chomping creepy lurkers IN the water...)

Picture

Hiking in the woods? Serenity. We belong there.
Picture

Speaking of distractions
these two goofballs distract me every time we are together. All I know is that we were trying to remove dozens of frogs from the egress window (A big icky slimy job I might add) and you can see they were no help at all.
Picture

Neil and I took a break from work.
(Seriously. I was looking for painting inspiration. Its part of my JOB ok?) and we went pumpkin picking. It was not easy to stay on task with four of these incredible dogs lovin on us. I want a dog. No I don't. Yes I do.
Picture

Who could forget?
Six chickens. Yep. They lay eggs and they talk to us.
We raised them from itty bitty adorable chicks!
Just one more miracle in my eyes.

OK. It's time to put the camera down, and paint some hens...
right after I go for a quick bike ride.

Sneak Peak!

10/30/2013

I've been painting, a lot. With the purchase of some new colors, crisp brushes, and unique wood sizes, came hours of inspiration. Playing outside this summer gave me some freedom and perspective that was truly needed. I'm on a roll...
Picture
I frequently get requests to "paint more horses! paint more cows!" So I did.

Picture
Thank you Lars for the beautiful wood scraps!

Picture
I absolutely get lost in capturing nature's playful personality.

Picture
Picture
Scraping paint onto wood is too much fun. Seriously how can this be my job?
I see some space in these two paintings that will be great for greeting cards.

Picture
I thought I sold this piece. The other day I had dinner with my daughter and saw it on her dining room shelf. Hmmmmmm.

Picture
My favorite girls came to help me this summer. Awwwwwwwe.......
They are my best creation so far.

Put this on your fancy calendar

Thinkers are back!

2/20/2013

Sawing, painting, drilling, sanding and smiling in the studio!

Picture

I used to make these "thinkers" often. For some reason I stopped. I woke up last week with a sudden desire to build new ones. While creating them, they take on a life of their own. It is so much fun! The barn wood is from my Grandpa Harry and Grandma Emma's barn that they built over 75 years ago. It had to be taken down and my brother, dad and I cut and saved some of the scraps. All of the other attached treasures come from the piles and drawers and boxes that I"ve collected for years in my studio.

I think you want one...

What inspires me?

1/21/2013

People often ask:
"where do you get your inspiration for paintings?"
Picture
Well...
I love walking outside in fields and gardens. That's when I clip plants and flowers that are finished with their sweet little lives. The drying petals, leaves and seeds add unexpected drama to the lines and shapes when I paint their portraits.

The orange painting on the left has a dried sunflower laying on it. The blue painting on the right is my version of that sunflower.

Another answer is that I love winter! The leaves and shrubs are mostly gone and you can see the bones of the trees. This is when their personality really shows through. That's what I like to capture.

Picture
This photo is special because it was taken while learning how to X-country Skate Ski in Wisconsin. Enjoying nature, breathing the fresh air, hearing the sounds of ski on snow, watching the sunset change all the colors...Who wouldn't be inspired? This will be my next painting...

I'm inspired by so many things... beautiful music, intense colors, thoughtful stories, white wine (ha) ...I'm really inspired when someone connects with me or my work. That's the sunny spot in my day.

Aaaaahhhh. It feels pretty good.

This is what I woke up to...

9/25/2012

Picture
I woke up to a mess. But it's a good mess because it's a sign that I"ve been working hard! My favorite part of this picture is the wine glass and coffee mug from two of my favorite artists, Dawn and Donovan. They can both be found this fall at the Sogn Valley Craft Fair. I LOVE their stuff...(and what goes in them). At the top of the picture you will see ANOTHER mug from another favorite, Tom Abel. Yep. It's time to clean the studio.

Riverfront Art Festival 2012

9/25/2012

Picture
The Riverfront Fine Arts Festival during the Defeat of Jesse James Days in Northfield was a success. Yay!  I brought these beautiful young friends into my booth to attract customers. It worked! We had so much fun....sold some paintings....ate fried food...met some "real" cowboys...laughed a LOT...went home smiling ...thanks to Neil and Jorja for helping me set up and tear down. (Darn, I didn't get a picture with them!)

SUMMER 2012

9/3/2012

This summer was BUSY. This is a glimpse of our little life...

I am grateful for LOVE and FAMILY.

(I cannot take credit for these photos. My daughters, Samara and Jorja, are my photographers.
When you see a great pic on this blog...it was because of them.)

This card is a favorite...

I just returned from the Bayfront Art Festival in Duluth MN. It was a beautiful show. It included great food, amazing vendors, a quick storm, friendly faces, FAMILY, new friends, lots of sales, and overall a success. This card was a top seller...

Forward>>

    Hi :)
Some of you remember my painting business as
    The Barefoot Studio.
I faded out the "barefootstudio" part of my name so that I can just use
    my OWN name:
    CARLA BROWN
    I like it!

Lets keep it simple from now on. Yay simplicity!

    I love painting.

When not painting on wood, I'm painting on canvas (and all over the floor and my clothes).

The latest adventure in the studio has been the process of adhering prints to wood.
It has taken a lot of hard work and investment to secure the process. It's been so much fun and has changed the direction of this business in so many exciting ways!

I still paint originals often and fortunately YOU keep on buying them.
    Thank you!

Having these unique prints available has allowed my painting style to evolve.
It also allows for a price range that is affordable to everyone.

It takes a lot of focus, hard work, dedication and confidence to make this all happen but its worth it!

I have a strong connection and curiosity with trees and plants. The patterns they create with the sky and air as their background are intriguing. Because of this relationship, the elements of nature often appear in my paintings.

Words and quotes are frequently incorporated  into my paintings. I like to help people giggle! I like to touch peoples souls. Life is SO big, yet so precious. The little moments are important to me.

THANKS TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO PURCHASED EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ART THIS YEAR. NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL, WITHOUT YOU ARTISTS WOULD STARVE AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE SAD AND GRAY. YAY YOU!

    Color makes us happy.
